The Curse of the Scroll

Zechariah 5:3

“Then he said to me, 'This is the curse that is going forth over the face of the whole land; surely everyone who steals will be purged away according to the writing on one side (of the scroll), and everyone who swears will be purged away according to the writing on the other side (of the scroll).’

Simply put, don’t steal, for the Lord sees your heart just as He sees your actions. Do not swear, let your words be pure and honest in all you say. Although we are forgiven through trusting in Christ, as the text indicates, He will judge the sin in our lives.

The Truth

“The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23)

Angelic Answer

Zechariah 4:6,7

'This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel saying, ‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ says the Lord of hosts. "What are you, O great mountain? Before Zerubbabel you will become a plain; and he will bring forth the capstone with shouts of 'Grace, grace to it!'

Governor "Zerubbabel" was to complete the building of Jerusalem, make the place habitable, and especially he was to reconstruct the Temple of God. The text is telling us that Zerubbabel will not complete this in his own might nor by his own power, but through the guidance of the Spirit of God.

Zerubbabel had a "mountain" of difficulties in his life, as we all do...and up to this point, he had been unable to do much about the task of rebuilding. God is saying through the angel (v.7), to him and to each one of us: have faith!

When God revels His will to us, our part is to act in faith and believe He will accomplish it through us.

The Truth

"Without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him." (Hebrews 11:6)

The Heavenly Promise

Zechariah 3:6,7

“And the angel of the Lord admonished Joshua, saying, Thus says the Lord of hosts, ‘If you will walk in My ways and if you will perform My service, then you will also govern My house and also have charge of My courts, and I will give thee places to walk among these that stand by.”

Here the angel of the Lord is saying, if we walk with the LORD now, we will rule and reign significantly with Him when we get to heaven.

Our usefulness and capacity to enjoy the ages to come are being determined right now. This life is simply a dress rehearsal for eternity. What we do for ourselves will not matter but what we do for our LORD we’ll never regret.

The Truth

“Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:12-14)

Trust In The LORD

Zechariah 2:5

“I, declares the LORD, ‘will be a wall of fire around her, and I will be the glory in her midst.”

Here the LORD declares He will be their (Jerusalem) defense. He will be their glory, their strength, their shield. Walls are not needed (v.4) only faith.

The Truth

“ Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit, says the LORD of hosts.” (Zechariah 4:6)

Return To Me

Zechariah 1:3-4

‘Thus says the LORD of hosts: “Return to Me and I will return to you,” says the LORD of hosts.’ Do not be like your fathers, to whom the former prophets preached, saying, ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts: “Turn now from your evil ways and your evil deeds.” But they did not hear nor heed Me,” says the LORD.

Here the prophet Zechariah is saying, “Look at your history", and , “Don’t be like you’re your fathers who, did not respond to the call of God. Act upon what the LORD is telling you. Turn to Him and He will turn to you.”

The Truth

“Draw nigh unto God and He will draw nigh unto you.” (James 4:8)

The Lord Shall Deliver Me

2 Timothy 4:18

"The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed, and will bring me safely to His heavenly kingdom; to Him be the glory forever and ever. Amen."

In this verse we find faith, hope and love in great measure. Faith says, "The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed." Hope encourages, He "will bring me safely to His heavenly kingdom." Love calls out to the Lord in utter adoration, "to Him be the glory forever and ever." And in Paul's ending flourish, the word "Amen" means "So be it".

In other words, we who are willing to have faith in the Lord Jesus will be received by Almighty God be with Him in heaven - forever. Death no longer has a hold on us. We shout a joyous "Amen”, "It is so!"

The Truth

“In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.” (John 14:2-3)

All Scripture Inspired

2 Timothy 3:16

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.”

Meaning, the Scriptures are the breath of God, the word of God; written through divine revelation by the Spirit to the prophets and the apostles – equipping the man of God for every good work (v.17).

Prayerfully read the scriptures and you will begin to discover that, all Scripture is inspired by God.

The Truth

“And so we have the prophetic word confirmed,[ which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts; knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God[ spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.” (2 Peter 1:19-20)

He Remains Faithful

2 Timothy 2:13

"If we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself."

Everyone in some way is or has been "faithless" before God. We are that way when we hate our enemy and do not pray for them. We are faithless when we do not love one another. If it was left to us, our faith would not sustain even our salvation and we would all be lost.

And yet there is a certain hope for every one who has ever called upon the name of the Lord: "He remains faithful." He who is always faithful cannot deny Himself. His faithfulness is imputed to those who will, place their trust in Him.

The Truth

“Therefore know that the Lord your God, He is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and mercy for a thousand generations with those who love Him and keep His commandments.” (Deuteronomy 7:9)

God's Deposit

2 Timothy 1:14

"Guard, through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us, the treasure which has been entrusted to you."

Simply put, we as believers have been given a valuable treasure, the Gospel. Which has been entrusted to us – meaning - God made a deposit in our lives. This begs the question, how secure is His deposit? What kind of a return will He receive? Share the wealth but........ guard the deposit.

The Truth

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.” (Romans 1:16)

Be The Example

1 Timothy 6:1

“Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honor, so that the name of God and His doctrine may not be blasphemed.”

Here Paul addresses our ministry as Christians on our jobs. He exhorts us to be a good witness by being the best worker, the best student, the best athlete we can be. The world is looking for reasons not to believe in God. Don’t give them one. Be an example to others.

The Truth

“And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.” (Colossians 3:17)

Do Not Gossip

1 Timothy 5:19

“Do not receive an accusation against an elder except from two or three witnesses.”

Here Paul is instructing the church not to listen to slander against spiritual leaders unless there are two or three witness willing to testify. Why, because the enemy wants to discredit/destroy the church, and what better way than to attack it’s leadership.

Therefore, do not listen to gossip ever. As long as you give ear to gossip, you encourage the gossiper to continue their sin.

The Truth

“Where there is no wood, the fire goes out.” (Proverbs 26:20)

Be An Example

1 Timothy 4:12

“Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity.”

So often we are guilty of exhorting others to do something when we ourselves do not. It’s the old attitude, “Do as I say, not as I do.” Credibility comes from action, accomplishment, leadership through example, not in saying one thing and doing another.

Timothy, a young man, was a true example to his brethren in word, conduct, love, spirit, faith and purity. May we all be that example of godliness to anyone that might take a close look at our life.

The Truth

“For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps.” (1 Peter 2:21)

The Mystery of Godliness

1 Timothy 3:16

“And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness:
God was manifested in the flesh, Justified in the Spirit, Seen by angels,
Preached among the Gentiles, Believed on in the world, Received up in glory.”

Simply put, the great mystery is that God became a man, dwelt among us, died for us, sent His Spirit to live within us, and has prepared a place for us in glory.

The Truth

“God demonstrated His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8)

Pray For All Men

1 Timothy 2:1-2

"I exhort therefore, first of all, that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and for all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty."

Here Paul is telling Timothy to: pray, plead, intercede, give thanks for all men (especially those in authority over us) that they may be saved. Christ died for all, the just and the unjust, the rich and the poor, the master and the slave, the Jew and the gentile - everyone. Why? So that all may come to the knowledge of the truth (v.4). He is not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9).

The Truth

"Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that He will send forth laborers into His harvest.” (Matthew 9:38)

Stick To The Gospel

1 Timothy 1:3-4

“As I urged you when I went into Macedonia—remain in Ephesus that you may charge some that they teach no other doctrine, nor give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which cause disputes rather than godly edification which is in faith.”

Here we see Paul’s instruction to Timothy was to, make sure the Ephesian believers did not get caught up in any doctrine other than the simplicity of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Good advise to all who would seek to teach or share the Word of God. Keep it simple, keep the main thing the main thing, and you’ll never go wrong.

The Truth

I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. (Galatians 2:20)

Haggai 2 "Be Strong and Build"

'Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel,' saith the Lord; 'and be strong, O Joshua, son of Jehozadak the high priest; and be strong, all ye people of the land,' saith the Lord, 'and work, for I am with you,' saith the Lord of hosts. According to the word that I covenanted with you when ye came out of Egypt, so My Spirit remains among you. Fear ye not.' (vv.4-5)

Here the Lord then speaks through Haggai the above words of encouragement concerning the rebuilding of the temple; "be strong, and work." In other words, don't worry about the outcome, just remember your labor for the Lord is never in vain. For what is the most splendid cathedral if God is not in it, influencing all by his presence and Spirit? Nothing.

No doubt the older returnees from exile, possibly including Haggai himself, remembered the original glory of Solomon’s temple. Unquestionably the new temple was nowhere near as splendid as the old one (v. 3). God knew it, the people knew it, and the leaders knew it. Furthermore, the book of Ezra records that when the new temple was dedicated, shouts of joy were mixed with sounds of weeping (3:10-13). Feeling discouraged was a natural result of recalling the nation’s and temple’s former glory, and why it had been lost—because of their sin and God’s judgment of conquest and exile.

In the face of these very human emotions, God Himself encouraged the people to “be strong” or “take courage” (v. 4, Josh. 1:6-7). The size and beauty of the temple wasn’t the point. The point was that God was their God, and He was with them once again—the same God who had delivered them from slavery in Egypt and shepherded them throughout their history (v. 5). Their responsibility was faithfully to do the work of rebuilding, not to mope around comparing their lives to the supposed “good old days.”

In other words, do not let a few critics discourage you. The chief glory of the temple is not the splendor of the building, but His presence within it - "As I covenanted to be with you when you came out of Egypt, so I will fulfill My covenant; for My Spirit remains among you, fear not." (Exodus 29:45-46).

The Truth

"This is what the Lord Almighty says: “Now hear these words, ‘Let your hands be strong so that the temple may be built.’ This is also what the prophets said who were present when the foundation was laid for the house of the Lord Almighty." (Zechariah 8:9)

I Am With You

Haggai 1:13

"Then Haggai, the messenger of the Lord, spoke by the commission of the Lord to the people saying, 'I am with you,' declares the Lord.

The background of this verse can be found throughout this chapter and summed up by the people’s obedience to their God – as they finally came and worked on the house of the Lord of hosts. His response to their obedience – I am with you.

What is God's will for your life? Have faith in Him and become willing to do what He says - His response will then be - "I am with you."

The Truth

And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen. (Matthew 28:18-20)

Safe Forever

Zephaniah 3:13

“The remnant of Israel shall do no unrighteousness and speak no lies, nor shall a deceitful tongue be found in their mouth; for they shall feed their flocks and lie down, and no one shall make them afraid.”

Here Zephaniah is saying, in the day of Israel’s repentance there will be no iniquity, no lies, no deceit. All is forgiven, forgotten, removed. In return the promise to Israel will be, they shall find in Him peace and safety – forever.

What a great promise and the Lord keeps His Word.

The Truth

The Lord is good to those who wait for Him, to the soul who seeks Him. (Lamentations 3:25)

Seek The Lord

Zephaniah 2:3

“Seek the Lord, all you meek of the earth, which have wrought His judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: It may be that you will be hidden in the day of the Lord’s anger.”

Here, Zephaniah is pleading with the nation of Israel to; seek the Lord, seek righteousness and seek humility, that she may be hidden in the day of Tribulation and escape those things which are to come.

According to Revelation 12, many of the nation will do just that in the middle of the Tribulation, when the antichrist revels his true colors. Then many people, not only Jews but gentiles as well, will realize they have been “left behind.”

Scripture also tells us in Isaiah 16 the name of the place where the Lord shall hide His people: Petra, located in present-day southern Jordan and carved out of a rock. Petra is a huge city located in the mountain cliffs that can hold a million or more people.

The Truth

“Therefore when you see the ‘abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place” (whoever reads, let him understand),“then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.” (Matthew 24:15-16)

The Day of the Lord

Zephaniah 1:7a

“Be silent in the presence of the Lord God; for the day of the Lord is at hand,”

Here Zephaniah begins to speak prophetically of the day of the Lord - a seven year period of time (tribulation) when God will pour out His wrath upon a Christ-rejecting, sinful world.

Therefore, we should do as Paul urged us in 2 Corinthians 13:5 - “Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith”, for the day of the Lord is coming and you do not want to be found wanting.

The Truth

“For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be.” (Mathew 24:21)
