“Wisdom
and knowledge have been granted to you. And I will give you riches and wealth
and honor, such as none of the kings who were before you has possessed nor
those who will come after you.”
In today's reading, Solomon had a difficult decision to make.
The Lord appeared to him and offered him anything he wanted, testing him to see
where his heart was. Solomon chose wisdom and knowledge that he might honor God
in the sight of his people over riches and glory. And in return God honored
him, and supplemented his choice with abundant wealth.
By asking God for wisdom first, Solomon showed where his heart's
treasure lay and passed the test with flying colors. Would any of us have done
the same? The longer I walk with the Lord and experience His grace and mercy in
my life, the more my heart identifies with the psalmist David, “Better is one day in your courts than thousands
elsewhere” (Psalm 84:2,10).
The Truth
“Choose
my instruction instead of silver, knowledge rather than choice gold, for wisdom
is more precious than rubies, and nothing you desire can compare with her.” (Proverbs
8:10-11)
