Condemnation vs. Identification

Romans 2:1b

“For in whatever you judge another you condemn yourself: for you who judge practice the same things.”

Judging others is a practice Jesus warned against in His sermon on the mount, “Do not judge lest you be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you.” (Matt. 7:1-2)

As Christians, we are not to make judgments of others in condemnation (in anger, accusatory) but we are to judge for identification (in wisdom). Jesus said, “beware of wolves in sheep’s clothing.” (Matt. 7:15) and “By their fruits you will know them.” (Matt. 7:16) Meaning, be vigilant and on guard to identify something that is off or out of place and correct it.

Correction, done with love and grace and not condemnation or judgment, is healthy for the body, backed by scripture and can restore one to fellowship.

The Truth

“Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted.” (Galatians 6:1)
