Proverbs 15 “Hearing Leads to Wisdom”

“The ear that hears the rebukes of life will abide among the wise. He who disdains instruction despises his own soul, but he who heeds rebuke gets understanding.” (vv.31-32)

There an old saying, “If I’ve told you once, I’ve told you a thousand times." I heard that a lot growing up, because I usually had to learn things the hard way. How much easier would it be on all concerned if we just heeded instruction instead of turning a deaf ear to it.

But, our sin nature tells us we know better, even better than God. Therefore, we disdain what we do not want to hear or feel, whether it is right or not, because we desire to follow our own will, our own path. Scripture tells us, “There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death” (Proverbs 14:12).

Life is difficult enough, why work against the current of those who are providing instruction in it. Listen, learn, and by so doing you will gain knowledge and understanding, and save yourself a lot of grief in the end. I thank God for all those who have poured wisdom into my life both practical and spiritual.

The Truth: “A wise man will hear and increase in learning, And a man of understanding will acquire wise counsel.” (Proverbs 1:5)
