“The God
of heaven will give us success; therefore we His servants will arise and
build.”
Chapter 3
describes how the people of Jerusalem, from the high priest to a perfume maker,
restored both the city and its walls. Nehemiah masterfully organized the
workers into groups that repaired sections of the wall then linked up to the
group next to them. The "linking up" with other groups proceeded round the entire enclosure of the city, including all the
gates, and the connecting parts of the wall. Everyone was inspired by the one
desire and intention to see the work completed.
This chapter indicates that many of these people were not skilled
masons or construction workers (vv. 8, 17, 32), but they didn’t use that as an excuse
to shirk from the community effort. Instead, they joined in to help repair their section
of the wall (v.12). And, as they worked with all their heart, something amazing
happened—the crew rebuilt the entire wall in just 52 days! (Nehemiah 6:15)
Today most churches, communities, and neighborhoods, need help
in repairing or rebuilding something. While the need may not be in the area of your gifting,
it is certainly within your ability to help. Therefore, be ready to roll up
your sleeves and join with others in a work of restoration regardless of your
skill – for our God will surely give you what is needed to accomplish the work.
The Truth
“Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about
you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, surely I
will uphold you with My righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10)
