The
Book of Nehemiah is the historic account of the rebuilding of the walls of
Jerusalem, which took place in the fifth century before Christ. But Nehemiah
did more than rebuild a wall, he also restored God’s people from ruin and
despair to a new walk with Him.
In
our text Nehemiah describes a people who were in trouble and were feeling a
great sense of disgrace and reproach. The walls of Jerusalem were broken down,
the gates had been burned with fire, and were no longer usable for protection
and defense from their enemies (vv.1-3).
If
we take Jerusalem as a symbol of our own lives, there are many of us who fit
this description. You look back on your life, and you see there are places
where the walls have been broken down. There is no longer any ability left to
resist destructive attacks. You have fallen victim to sinful habits that you
now find difficult to break, and you feel vulnerable.
However,
when the Spirit (the comforter) reveals the brokenness, it is never to condemn,
but to give a chance to rebuild. What is needed when this occurres is honestly in facing the
ruin, whatever it may be, then simply ask God to begin rebuilding your life. Just
as Nehemiah (who’s name means Comforter) interceded for the people in prayer to
God for the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem (vv.4-11), so Jesus Christ
(who sits at the right hand of the Father) will intercede for you in your
request to rebuild your life.
The
Truth
“He (Jesus)
is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since
He always lives to make intercession for them.” (Hebrews 7:25)
