“And it
came to pass after this, that David inquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up
into any of the cities of Judah? And the LORD said to him, Go up. And David
said, Where shall I go up? And he said, To Hebron.” (v.1)
After the death of Saul and Jonathan, David saw the way
was clear for the fulfilment of God’s promise that he should be king. He knew
his destination, but he also knew that the providence of God would pave the
way. He would take no step (in such a crisis) of his own and the nation's
history, without asking and obtaining divine direction. Upon
receiving God’s direction, David and his company made there way to Hebron where he was publicly anointed king of Judah.
Here
we see the key to David’s success. He was a man that inquired of God and
followed His specific instructions. He had an intimacy with God and sought His devine guidance for His people
through prayer. Here, in the very beginning of his rule, he lays his foundation in God’s
counsel and direction.
What
a great example for all of us, to apply prayer and supplication for God's direction and
aid in our lives.
The
Truth
“If any of
you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all
without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” (James 1:5)
