The First High Priest
"So
the Lord said to Aaron, 'You and your sons and your father's household with you
shall bear the guilt in connection with the sanctuary, and you and your sons
with you shall bear the guilt in connection with your priesthood.”
Aaron, the
older brother of Moses, was the first high priest of Israel, an office that
would belong to his descendants through the generations. They would be
responsible to bring the guilt of themselves and the nation before the Lord,
but as to each man, they would not be able to continue in office.
Aaron, his
office, and the men who succeeded him, were people who eventually died, and
also they were parables, an earthly picture of our great High Priest who is at
the right hand of the Father in eternity.
The Lord
Jesus, "because He lives forever, has an unchangeable priesthood"
(Hebrews 7:24). Every moment of each day, our Savior is praying. He knows your
name, your situation, and He, Himself God, is praying to the Father for you.
The
sacrifices presented by Aaron and his sons are no longer necessary because
Jesus Christ did it "once for all when He offered up Himself"
The Truth
“For such a High Priest was fitting
for us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and has
become higher than the heavens; who does not need daily, as those high priests,
to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the people’s, for
this He did once for all when He offered up Himself.” (Hebrews 7:26-27)
