The Book

Revelation 5:1

“And I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals.”

The book John sees is actually a scroll but unlike most scrolls of that period, it had writing on both sides and it was sealed with seven seals. According to Jewish history, the only type of document fitting that description was a title deed to a piece of property, where the owner was unable to pay his debt.

During that time, the owner (unable to pay) would then have to relinquishing his property and a list of his debts would be written on the backside of the deed and sealed with seven seals. If at any time during the ensuing seven years he could pay off his debts, the seals would be broken and the title deed returned.

This explains what is in the hand of the One who sits on the throne. It’s the title deed to the earth. This deed was originally given to Adam in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 1:28) but Adam forfeited his right to ownership when he rebelled and transferred it to Satan by his sin (see Romans 5:14, 2 Corinthians 4:4, John 12:31). Man then is to blame for turning the world over to Satan and for the state of the depravity we see in the world today.

The question that remains is, Who is able to meet the requirements, to pay off the debt? Who is worthy to open the book and loose it’s seals and take control of the earth back?

John is told who is worthy in his vision and he tells us in this book.

The Truth

“And one of the elders said to me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, has prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.” (Revelation 5:5)
