“According
to the grace of God which was given to me, like a wise master builder I laid a
foundation and another is building on it. But each man must be careful how he
builds on it.” (v.10a)
Here Paul
is saying that he laid the foundation of the church,
but it is still under construction, as others are building on it. The
foundation, Jesus Christ, has already been laid by Paul’s preaching of the gospel
(v. 11), but each person who labors in the church should be careful how they add
to it.
In 1992, Hurricane Andrew destroyed thousands of homes in South
Florida. Yet in an area where the wreckage looked like a war zone, one house
remained standing, still firmly anchored to its foundation.
When a reporter asked the homeowner why his house had not been
blown away, he replied, "I built this house myself. I also built it according
to the Florida state building code. When the code called for two-inch by
six-inch roof trusses, I used two-inch by six-inch roof trusses. I was told
that a house built according to code could withstand a hurricane—and it
did."
In life when adversity comes, and it
will come, a life built on the firm foundation of Jesus Christ cannot be destroyed.
The
Truth
“Therefore everyone
who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man
who built his house on the rock.”
