In
today’s reading the Lord appears to Solomon in a dream and asked him, “What can
I give you” (v.5)?
King
Solomon a man who “showed his love for the Lord by walking according to the
statutes of his father David” (v. 3), was given something like a one-wish
opportunity. Not by an imaginary genie mind you, but by God Himself (in a
dream) saying, “Ask what I shall give you” (v. 5).
Now
most of us might ask for long life, or riches, or power, but not Solomon. He
asked for, “wisdom” (v.9). Solomon’s request so pleased God that, not only did
God grant his request but, God added to him what he did not ask for, riches and
honor, so that there was none like him among the kings all of his days (vv.12-13).
We
would be wise to pray for the same.
The
Truth
“If any of
you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without
reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith,
with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed
by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from
the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.” (James
1:5-8)
