"A
good name is better than precious ointment"
The
comparison of a good name to fine perfume is an interesting analogy for, life
“under the sun” (on earth). A reputation does have a way of lingering. Honesty,
integrity, and generosity are just a few of the key ingredients we would expect
to find in such a moral person. And, like the aroma of a precious ointment, our
lives linger on - through our name. Our attitudes and actions, will determine how
people think of us both now, and even after we are gone.
The
conclusion that Solomon came to here is based on natural, human reasoning and not
divine wisdom. But I would say, as it applies to us “under the sun,” it's good advise.
The Truth: “Finally,
brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right,
whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is
excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things. Whatever you have learned
or received or heard from me, or seen in me, put into practice.” (Philippians
4:8-9)
